【摘要】:Inpreparingthisglossarytheobjecthasbeentostandardizeandtoco-ordinatethetechnicaltermsincurrentuseinminingintheUnitedKingdom.Althoughthemajorityofthetermsarenecessarilyconcernedwithcoalmining,accounthasbeentakenofcertaintermsusedinotherformsofminingandofquarrying.Duringthelongperiodwhichhaselapsedsincethepublicationofthelastauthoritativeminingglossary,manynewtermshavecomeintouse.Theneedforthepresentglossaryhasarisenfromthewidelyvaryinginterpretationanduseofsuchnewterms,andtheprevalentuseofmorethanonesynonym,somepurelylocalinorigin,toindicatespecificmeanings.Theglossarywillinitiallybeissuedinanumberofsections,accordingtosubjectmatter,andwillincludetermsrelevanttothefollowingfieldsofmining:PlanningandSurveying;Ventilation;BoringandExploration;Drainage;Geology;DrillingandBlasting;ElectricalEngineeringandLighting;WinningandWorking;Transport;ShaftsandAssociatedEquipment;StrataControl.(i)Wheretwoormoretermsareinusethetermwhichisfavouredisgivenfirstandprintedinheavytype.Itishopedthatsuchpreferredtermswillgraduallydisplacethenon-preferredterms.Wheretheuseofanytermisconsideredtobeundesirableitismarked'deprecated'.(ii)Takingabroadviewofthevarioussectionsofthisglossary,onlytermswhichhaveaspecificmeaninginmininghavebeenincludedand,generally,whereatechnicaltermhasanacceptedmeaninginotherfieldsofengineeringithasbeenomitted;thefewexceptionsaretermswhichareofparticularandfundamentalimportanceinmining.(iii)Purelylocaltermsarenotdefined,butthoseofsufficientimport-anceareincludedasnon-preferredtermsalongsidethepreferredsynonyms.(iv)Obsoletetermsareexcluded.note:*'Aglossaryoftheminingandmineralindustry'byA.H.Fay,U.S.BureauofMines,Washington,1920.
